Dr Cotterell trained in Psychiatry following a period of time working as a General Practitioner in London. He completed his training in London, West Sussex and Hampshire specialising in the Psychiatric treatment of Older Adults. While training he graduated with Distinction from a Masters programme in Clinical Neuroscience.

He returned to the UK in 2020 following a period of 10 years developing clinical and educational programmes in British Columbia, Canada. He has maintained a strong research interest- publishing articles on topics ranging from Seasonal Affective Disorder to medicolegal aspects of Capacity Assessment, as well as contributing chapters to peer reviewed texts.

He maintains a strong involvement in Clinical Management and Medical Education, forming an integral part of the development of Subspecialty training schemes in Old Age Psychiatry. He mentors and educates a broad range of trainees in his current Clinical role which includes responsibility for an Inpatient unit as well as a Hospital Liaison service for Older Adults in West Sussex, alongside his private work.

His work involves the treatment of all Psychiatric conditions in adults over the age of 50- but he has a special interest in Cognitive Disorders (including Covid-19 related cognitive dysfunction), Circadian Rhythm and Sleep Disorders, and Psychiatric disorders associated with Neurological conditions eg Parkinson’s disease. His approach is holistic, focusing particularly on optimising the management of medical conditions, as well as addressing social and psychological factors, before incorporating medication strategies if required.
