GMC No: 6128215

I was brought up in the North east of England, attending the Royal Grammar school in Newcastle, during which time I was a Young Scientist of the year.

I completed my medical degree at Oxford University as well as a BA (honors) in Physiological sciences. After finishing medical school, I returned to the North East to undertake my Foundation training and spent one-year training in Orthopaedics. Thereafter, I completed my psychiatric training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry in Manchester.

I am passionate about mental health and well-being and a strong advocate for supporting adolescents and young adults with mental ill-health. My work is intellectually challenging and rewarding. I have been actively involved in the assessment and treatment of children and young people with emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties. In addition to having extensive experience of pharmacotherapy in children and young people, I have also had training in delivering psychological therapy. This includes psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and family therapy.

I have worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist in a variety of settings including an adolescent psychiatric intensive care unit. I have worked in Qatar where I set-up and developed a dynamic specialist substance misuse service for adolescents. I was responsible for delivering evidenced-based interventions that reduced risk factors and promoted resilience.

I believe in a holistic approach to mental ill-health and the focus of my consultations is to help people enhance their resilience and develop their strengths. I use a bio-psycho-social-spiritual model to assess people and recommend individualised treatments. I am a strong advocate for combining medication with talking therapies, especially family interventions.

I have worked with people who have experienced trauma and use trauma-informed care to help people overcome their crises.

Dr Omar is able to offer assessments and recommend evidence-based treatments for different conditions including ADHD, Autism, Depression, Anxiety, PTSD and substance use.
