Patient Guide: What to expect from your private ADHD medication treatment

How to prepare and what to expect – before, during and after your ADHD treatment.

Step 1: Preparing for Your Treatment

12-week medication treatment plan: £750

This includes:

  • A personalised treatment plan
  • Prescription writing (note: the cost of the medication itself is NOT included – see below)
  • End-of-titration review appointment
  • GP treatment letter
  • Shared Care Agreement request

Not included:

  • The cost of medication. This varies depending on the type of medication and the pharmacy you choose to supply it. We recommend shopping around to compare prices.

Optional extras

  • Extra 4-week titration: £200
(Your prescriber may recommend this, but it’s optional.)
  • Follow-up review with consultant (30 mins): £180
  • If Shared Care is declined by your GP: £25 per prescription
(Covers prescription writing only; medication cost is separate and varies according to type of medication and the pharmacy you choose to supply your meds). We’ll continue your prescriptions if Shared Care isn’t accepted.)
  • Annual review (30 mins): £180
    (Required while taking ADHD medication.)
  • We can only accept patients who have been assessed through our private or Right to Choose services.
  • We can’t currently start private treatment if you’ve been diagnosed by another provider.
  • If your ADHD was diagnosed in childhood, an adult reassessment is usually required.

Why?

  • Even if you provide your previous assessment report, our psychiatrist will need to review it to determine whether it contains enough detail to move forward with treatment or medication. In many cases, the report may not provide all the information required, or it may be several years old.
  • If your diagnosis was made in childhood, it is usually necessary to complete a full adult reassessment, as ADHD can present differently in adulthood. Your previous reports are still useful for context, but the assessment ensures we have a full, up-to-date understanding of your needs.

At the end of your assessment:

  • Your Consultant will prepare a detailed assessment report. A copy will be sent to your GP.
  • They will recommend a personalised treatment plan based on your individual needs and lifestyle.
  • If medication is suitable, you’ll be referred to our Titration Service.
  • Some medical checks (such as an ECG) may be needed to ensure it’s safe for you to start treatment.
  • If needed, we’ll ask your GP to arrange these on your behalf, but if they are not happy to do this, you may need to source and pay for these privately.
  • We’ll need you (or your GP) to send a copy of the test results before we can start treatment.

When you start ADHD treatment, we need to check how your body responds to medication. This helps us:

  • Make sure the medication is right for you.
  • Find the best dose to reduce your symptoms.
  • Keep side effects as minimal as possible.

This process is called titration. It usually lasts about 12 weeks.

What you’ll need to do

During titration, you’ll be asked to:

  • Record your blood pressure, pulse and weight.
  • Fill in regular monitoring forms.
  • Let us know about any side effects or improvements.

You’ll need a blood pressure monitor (BP monitor). These are easy to find in most local pharmacies and usually cost around £15-20.

Work closely with your prescriber

  • You’ll need to be at home with reliable internet during the 12 weeks.
  • Your prescriber will contact you through your online patient portal.
  • If you have holidays, medical procedures, or work abroad planned, please tell us as soon as possible so we can adjust your treatment plan.
  • Please note: we cannot send medication abroad.

Before starting treatment, you’ll need to complete these steps:

Fill out 2 forms in your portal (Forms > Pending Forms):

  • Adult Pre-Titration Checklist Form.
  • BP, Pulse, Weight and Height Form (you’ll need your BP monitor).

Upload documents to your portal:

Update your details (in My Profile):

  • Home address
  • GP details

This is to ensure your prescriptions are sent to the right address.

Important: Please complete everything within 28 days to avoid delays starting your treatment.

Once you have completed your forms, we’ll send you an invoice.

Step 2: Starting Your Medication

  • They’ll review your records and confirm it’s safe to start.
  • They’ll send your treatment plan: read it carefully.

Confirm via your portal that you:

  • Agree with the treatment plan.
  • Understand the fortnightly monitoring process.
  • Tell us if you’re getting ADHD treatment elsewhere.
  • Fill out the Prescription Address Form to get your meds.
  • Take your medication exactly as directed (usually in the morning).
  • Complete your first ADHD monitoring form on Day 5, then every 2 weeks after that.

Let us know if you:

  • Notice any changes in your physical or mental health.
  • Start or stop any other medications.
  • Become pregnant.
  • Request new prescriptionsat least 7 days before your supply runs out
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and recreational drugs. These can increase side effects or interfere with the way your treatment works.
  • Keep medication locked away.
  • Never share your medication with anyone else.
  • If you’re travelling, only pack what you need and keep it secure.
  • If lost or stolen, report to the police and contact your prescriber immediately.

Step 3: End of Titration

  • Complete the End of Titration Review Form within 7 days.
  • Book a review appointment with your prescriber.
  • Keep requesting prescriptions as usual to avoid any gaps.
  • Your prescriber will send paperwork to your GP to request Shared Care.
  • Your GP is requested to respond within 28 days.
  • It’s a good idea to contact your GP to confirm they received the letter.
  • If anything is unclear or delayed, message us via your portal.

Important information: The NHS medical exemption certificate does not apply to private prescriptions.

  • Psychiatry UK will continue issuing your prescriptions (£25 per script + cost of medication).
  • You’ll need blood pressure, pulse and weight checks at 6 months.
  • You’ll be invited to an Annual Review (£180).
