Dr. Colhoun studied Medicine in National University of Ireland, Galway, graduating in 1997. She trained in Psychiatry in Ireland and in Child Psychiatry in Northern Ireland where she received her CCT (2012). She has worked with all childhood mental health problems, as Consultant in the Northern Ireland (NHS-CAMHS) and as a member of working groups for Psychiatric service development at local level and the College of Psychiatrists, Ireland.
Her Special Interest is Early Intervention/Early Years Mental Health, especially Evidence-Based, Solution-Focused interventions which enable parents to support their child’s mental health. She has presented her own work in this area at local and national level. She has contributed to a Cochrane review of Depression Prevention Programmes.
Her Special Interest informs her approach to all childhood mental health. This emphasises the strengths of the child and their parents/carers, her therapeutic relationship with them and the development of holistic interventions which recognise the unique social, psychological, educational and lifestyle factors impacting each child.
