What to Expect

At Psychiatry-UK, we offer expert-led autism assessments for children and young people using a Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) approach.
This process involves three carefully designed stages and is delivered by specialist clinicians to ensure an accurate and supportive diagnosis.

Pre-Assessment Information Gathering

Before we begin the assessment process, we gather important background information from:

You (the parent or guardian)
Your child (where appropriate)
Their school (e.g. teacher or SENDCo)

This information is reviewed by a Consultant Psychiatrist before Stage 1 of the assessment begins.

Note: All three stages must be completed to receive a diagnostic outcome.

Psychiatry UK’s 3 Stage Process

1. Initial Psychiatric Assessment

Duration: 2 hours (via secure video link)
Who attends: Parent(s) and child/adolescent

Part A:
A comprehensive discussion about your child’s history, strengths, challenges, and potential autism traits.

Part B:
Review of questionnaires and background information from home and school settings.

2. ADOS Assessment

Conducted by: Specialist Speech and Language Therapist
or Clinical Psychologist

Format: In-person or online, depending on your child’s age

This session uses the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) to assess communication, behaviour, and interaction. The clinician’s report is shared with the Consultant Psychiatrist ahead of Stage 3.

Important:
Depending on your child’s age, this stage may require an in-person appointment.

3. Feedback and Diagnosis

Duration: 30 minutes (online)
Who attends: Parent(s) and/or child, depending on age

In this final appointment, your Consultant Psychiatrist will:

– Review the combined findings from all stages
– Confirm if an autism diagnosis is appropriate
– Share tailored recommendations and support options

You will receive a comprehensive diagnostic report after this session.
