I’m a Consultant Psychiatrist with over 20 years in medicine & almost a decade of consultant-level practice, spanning the full range of adult mental health care, helping people with complex mental health difficulties achieve their recovery goals through thoughtful assessments & effective treatments. I’ve worked as a consultant in NHS community mental health teams, on acute inpatient wards, in crisis & home treatment services, in inpatient rehabilitation & psychiatric intensive care. I’ve also worked in substance misuse services & psychotherapy services. That range of experience is useful, I find, because people rarely arrive neatly. I’m comfortable with the person whose neurodivergence is tangled up with depression, addiction, trauma, or a long history of not being believed.
My practice now focuses on the assessment, diagnosis & treatment of ADHD & autism in adults. I also see people with depression, anxiety disorders, addiction, personality disorders, psychosis & post-traumatic stress disorder.
I’ve been on the other side of the desk myself. I was diagnosed with ADHD & dyslexia in 2007, while I was at medical school, & diagnosed with dyspraxia in 2022. I know what it is to be assessed, to be handed an explanation of what your brain is doing, & then to have to work out for yourself what that actually means for your life. It shapes everything about how I explain a diagnosis & what I think a good assessment should feel like.
I’m originally from Dublin & graduated in Medicine and Surgery (BMBS) from the University of Exeter. I hold Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych), a postgraduate Diploma in Psychiatry from the University of Manchester, & a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Psychiatry with an endorsement in Substance Misuse. I’m an Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act. Alongside my psychiatric training I’ve trained in psychotherapy too; foundation training at the Institute of Psychoanalysis & further training in Mentalization-Based Treatment at the Anna Freud Centre. I’ve also done extra training in adult ADHD with UKAAN & autism assessment using the ADOS-2.
I have a longstanding interest in therapeutic approaches to personality difficulties & disorders; I was a co-author on a randomised controlled trial of a low-intensity psychological intervention, published in BJPsych Open. I also prepare expert witness reports for the courts.
Outside of medicine, I train most days & I am fitness focused; weight-training, endurance work, CrossFit & cycling primarily but I love finding new ways to train too.
