After completing my degree and Foundation Training in the Southwest, I worked in a children’s hospital in Perth, Australia clocking up nearly a year in acute paediatrics. I completed the Diploma in Child Health given my interest in neurodevelopment. During the early years of my career, I volunteered in orphanages in Romania and Kenya and worked clinically in rural Madagascar.

Returning to the Southwest, I pursued my passion in neurodevelopment – working in CAMHS and undertaking autism assessments in a children’s team, gaining my ADOS 2 certificate.

I specialised in the Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities around 2012 and became a consultant in 2019. I work within a community team in Cornwall, managing adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) and their mental health. I use a biopsychosocial approach in the assessment and management of behaviours of concern, autism, intensive support, dementia, mental illness and genetics. I use the Mental Capacity and Mental Health Act frequently as a Section 12 approved clinician. In recent years I have focused on complex epilepsy in our client group; working closely with families and care providers in the medical management and risk assessments of people with epilepsy and ID.

I am involved in research into epilepsy, SUDEP, genetics and bone health. I am the clinical tutor for core psychiatry trainees in Cornwall – winning the most supportive supervisor last year.
