How to make an ADHD or ASD referral

Eligibility Criteria

Before making a referral to Psychiatry UK, please check with your patient that an online service is suitable for their needs.

Please read the additional guidance attached to ensure that you include details of any presenting risks, severe problems or difficulties to enable us to make an informed decision about the appropriateness of a referral.

Information about ECGs (ADHD patients only)

Where an ECG is clinically indicated for ADHD titration, patients are given the choice of a location generally within 5-10 miles of their address. In a few cases where an ECG close to the patient’s residence is unavailable, and the patient is unwilling or unable to travel to the clinic location, we will ask the patient’s GP surgery if they are willing to carry out an ECG instead.

What information should a referral contain?

  • Please submit a short covering letter stating that you (the GP or ANP) wish to refer the patient to Psychiatry UK for an ADHD or autism assessment under the Right to Choose legislation.
  • The letter should be addressed to Psychiatry UK, and your name should be included at the bottom of the letter.

What should be included?

  • A brief explanation of your reasons for referring the patient, clearly stating any specific concerns or needs, and any past interventions
  • The patient’s telephone number and email address (these are our primary forms of contact)
  • The patient’s medical summary

Where to send the referral

Send the referral via email or Egress (including attachments) to:

What happens next?

When your patient has been assessed, the consultant will write to you with a diagnosis and a recommended treatment plan if applicable.

If the patient has chosen medication treatment (ADHD only), we will write to you after their End of Titration Review, with details of their treatment to date, clinical response and mental state examination.

Shared care

Once the patient has had an End of Titration Review, Psychiatry UK will request your agreement to continue the prescribing of your patient’s medication for the following 12 months, with an expectation that the patient will have their blood pressure, pulse and weight reviewed after six months by primary care.

Unless we hear otherwise from the patient’s registered GP practice, your patient will be offered an Annual Review with their consultant at the end of each 12-month period. If at any time you consider that your patient needs specialist advice regarding their medication or treatment, or an earlier review, please feel free to contact us via email or letter.

Concerns/notification of a patient death

Please notify us of any deaths or serious harm incidents relating to a patient who is on our waiting lists or under a Shared Care Agreement.
