Dr Onwuchekwa (‘Dr Ike’) graduated as a medical doctor from Nigeria in 2004. He completed his basic specialist training in psychiatry in Ireland. Thereafter, he gained an extended period of psychiatry experience and training, working in multiple psychiatry subspecialties across the lifespan.

Dr Ike aligned with the training pathway of Canada and was certified as a specialist in psychiatry by the Royal College in Canada. He subsequently obtained a certificate of eligibility for specialist registration and is currently in the Specialist register in the UK.

He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and Specialist Associate Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists UK. Dr Ike has been given the status of an Approved Clinician for the purpose of clinical assessments under the mental health act in the UK.

He has been an assistant professor of psychiatry at two different universities on the east coast of Canada, and has practised at the level of a Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK and Canada for a period of years. He did some training in CBT, and participated in the Therapeutic Community, an intervention for patients with personality disorders in the UK.

Dr Ike has a master’s degree in clinical research. His clinical interests include psychiatry phenomenology, differential diagnosis, translational research, individualised medicine. He has shared insights of how these can be applied to the management of complex cases with other psychiatry colleagues during teachings and clinical
rounds over the years. He delivered a training session on the recognition of ADHD to Consultant Psychiatrists in the NHS. He has also been a member of an NHS trust’s NICE (clinical) guidance committee, drug and therapeutics committee.

Dr Ike has expertise in the diagnosis and management of different conditions that affect people of working age group, especially:

  • Bipolar disorder
  • ADHD
  • Autism
  • Psychosis and Schizophrenia
  • Depressive disorders
  • Anxiety disorders (including OCD and PTSD)
  • Clinical formulation of the psychological manifestations of trauma, including the impact on a person’s personality.
