Dr Amir Ahmed, MBChB, MRCPsych, PG Cert with Distinction in Open Dialogue, CCT in General Adult Psychiatry, Section 12 Approved, and Approved Clinician status under the Mental Health Act.
I am a Consultant Psychiatrist from the South East of England, and currently practising in the Greater London area. I attained my medical degree from the University of Liverpool, and completed my specialist training in East London after initially working in General Practice. I am qualified as a General Adult Psychiatrist.
I have worked in a wide variety of settings; both inpatient and outpatient, and across all areas of Psychiatry. These include specialist services such as:
- Perinatal Psychiatry (mental health of women before and after giving birth)
- Eating Disorders
I have experience in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of:
- Anxiety and Mood Disorders (Anxiety, Depression, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Personality Disorders)
- Psychosis (Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, and Substance Misuse)
I am familiar with a broad spectrum of presentations in diverse populations; ranging from acute crisis, to recovery and rehabilitation.
I have carried out a significant amount of Psychotherapeutic work throughout my career, and also have a postgraduate qualification in Open Dialogue which promotes a person-centred network approach.
I am an advocate of practising holistically and collaboratively with regards to an individual’s mental health. My fundamental aim is to provide compassionate care; suited to a person’s specific needs, and balanced with their wishes and aspirations.
In the past, I have worked in a volunteer capacity as a Psychiatrist and Therapist at the Freedom from Torture organisation, so have considerable expertise in treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well being adept at managing the above conditions. Other areas of interest include:
- Transcultural Psychiatry
- Social Prescribing
- Medical Education
I hold membership with the Transcultural and Rainbow Special Interest Groups affiliated to the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
I am fluent in Punjabi and Urdu in addition to English; and find language, communication skills, and cultural nuances to be fascinating.
