My name is Alfred and I was born in London and I am of Sri Lankan ethnic origin, educated at Whitgift School then Oxford. I graduated in Medicine from Lincoln College, Oxford University in 1996 and have worked continuously in the NHS since. In the years as a junior doctor I worked in medicine in Glasgow and Birmingham until early 2000, when I began the career path in psychiatry at St George’s, London where I trained until 2010. I have been a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist since 2008 when I completed the CCST in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. I qualified as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist in 2010. I am also an Expert Witness for the Court. Between 2007- present I engaged in occasional private work with Dr Angel Adams PhD, Clinical Psychologist, Kingston and The Expert Witness Panel, Hove, East Sussex. Angel and I commenced online consultations in 2018 and continued during the coronavirus pandemic.
I have held permanent posts as a Consultant Psychiatrist for the NHS in Crawley, West Sussex 2008-2016, Wiltshire 2016-2021 and North Somerset 2021- present. Currently I work as a substantive consultant in North Somerset CAMHS for Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust for 8 sessions. I work 2 sessions as a Speciality Doctor in Addictions, working with adults and the homeless in Swindon for Turning Point. I also have one session as Undergraduate Tutor for Psychiatry in Swindon for the University of Bristol Medical School.
My intention is to do a small amount of private work. I have tried to maintain a grasp of all areas of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for as long as possible without specialising too much or getting deskilled. I still enjoy the work and feel very grateful to be engaging with young people and their families in different contexts. My areas of greater interest are Depression, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Eating Disorders, Crisis and Outreach work and management of the highest risk cases, Safeguarding and Addictions.
