Dr Wilkinson trained in medicine at Newcastle University and started working in mental health services as a trainee General Practitioner. He then changed to work exclusively in mental health services, now with over 20 years’ experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist, working in both community and hospital services.

Dr Wilkinson completed specialist training in the psychiatry of learning disability in the north east of England, starting his first post as Consultant Psychiatrist. He then took on the role of Clinical Director for learning disability services. He has been a Royal College trainer for both junior and senior psychiatry trainees and worked in acquired brain injury rehabilitation services.

He is an experienced Medical Director for national independent providers of mental health and learning disability services, whilst also acting as Responsible Officer for medical revalidation. 

He is trained and experienced in the diagnosis of autism using the standardised assessment tools of DISCO (Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders) and ADI (Autism Diagnostic Interview). Dr Wilkinson has been involved in the setting up and running of autism diagnostic services in both the NHS and private settings.

Recently Dr Wilkinson has helped to  establish a rehabilitation service for adults with severe mental illness. He continues to work for the Mental Health Tribunal Service as a medical member.

Dr Wilkinson has a broad range of experience and prides himself in being approachable and honest, and continues to have a particular interest in the diagnosis and support of adults with autism spectrum disorder.
